Lisbon (Sunday 9 June)

Yesterday was a tough day because of Godzilla the Cold.   Hilary proposes staying in Lisbon until Godzilla abates, even if it takes several days, and meanwhile having the quietest possible day today.  This seems sensible – certainly I have no better plan.

By the afternoon we both (especially Hilary) need to get out and about.  We wander up to castle and into the Alfama district, the old city of Lisbon south of castle; it’s less than a kilometre from our apartment.  People are putting up a lot of street decorations, though we don’t yet know why. We have afternoon coffee at a street café with a good band from Cape Verde Islands (buying a CD), and then return to the apartment.

I assess options for the trip to Santiago and Finisterre.  Everything is difficult and involves multi-day travel legs for both Lisbon to Santiago and also Santiago to Bordeaux.  Given this, we decide that Santiago and Finisterre will have to be dropped from the route, so that our geographical crossing of Europe will reach its most westerly point at Cabo da Roca, west of Lisbon.  Strictly this is correct; Cabo da Roca is 11 km west of Finisterre.
